Finca La Virgen is a standout farm in Nicaragua’s coffee landscape, renowned for its commitment to both quality and sustainability. Situated in the verdant mountains of Matagalpa, Finca La Virgen operates on 306 hectares, with 134 hectares dedicated to coffee production. The farm’s coffee is cultivated at an altitude of 1,150 meters, benefiting from the region’s ideal climate of cool temperatures and consistent rainfall, which contributes to the development of its complex flavours.
This lot features a blend of Red Catuai, a traditional variety known for its sweetness, and Hybrid H3, a newer hybrid resulting from the cross between Caturra and an Ethiopian landrace from the CATIE collection. The Hybrid H3 adds a bright, delicate acidity, balancing the cup beautifully.
The Hueck and Ponçon families are deeply committed to sustainable practices. They have invested in community programs such as free schooling, healthcare, and housing for workers. This focus on social responsibility extends beyond the farm, creating a positive impact on the surrounding community. Finca La Virgen is also part of the World Coffee Research International Multilocation Variety Trial, a project that tests the resilience and performance of various coffee varieties in different growing conditions, contributing to the global coffee research effort.
Finca La Virgen is more than just a coffee farm; it’s a symbol of what can be achieved when passion for coffee meets a dedication to people and the environment. The farm continues to push forward with innovative practices, ensuring that future generations of coffee lovers will enjoy the fruits of their labour.
The farm is Rainforest Alliance certified, meaning it has standards that are intended to protect the environment and the workers. It prohibits the use of certain dangerous chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
