Gesha (also widely and wrongly referred to as geisha) is a Coffea Arabica variety that traces its roots to the mountainous Gesha region of southwestern Ethiopia, identified in the 1930s. It’s claimed that a British Consul collected and planted the sample of this variety in Tanzania and Costa Rica around 1936 with cultivation spreading to Panama in the 1960s, the main interest being the coffee’s tolerance to several common diseases. While Panama is not among the top coffee producers in the world, it has the most expensive coffee in the world, the Panama Gesha coffee.
Since 2004, the Gesha coffee rose to prominence and continues to win outstanding contests especially when it received exceptionally high marks and broke the then record for green coffee auction prices in the 2004 Best of Panama Competition and auction.
We are proud to present to you 2 coffees from the famed Janson Farm in Panama – the 411 Hacienda Gesha Coffee with an SCA Cup Score of 91.25, and the 543 Alpes Gesha Coffee with an SCA Cup Score of 88.5. These scores put them as the finest in the world.
The prized Hacienda coffee is a prime example of meticulous processing aimed at maximising flavour potential and quality. This lot undergoes a carefully controlled process that highlights the unique characteristics of the region and the impact of extended fermentation. The coffee cherries are allowed to become “over ripe” on the tree, meaning they are harvested at peak ripeness or slightly beyond. This practice often results in sweeter, more complex flavour profiles. It goes significantly over the typical fermentation process, with an extended 72-hour fermentation period in water, before being sun dried in a slow process do develop the flavours.
This exceptional Alpes Lot showcases the traditional washed process, with 48 hours of fermentation followed by 5 days of drying on raised beds, results in a clean, crisp, and beautifully articulated cup. On the palate, the coffee presents a harmonious blend of fruit-forward flavours. Crisp green apple and juicy pear notes lead, supported by bright citrus undertones. The lemongrass detected in the aroma translates to a refreshing, tea-like quality in the cup, reminiscent of prized black tea.
