The Hacienda Sonora Estate, or Sonora Coffee, is a sprawling 100-hectare estate at the foot of the renowned Poas Volcano in Central Valley, Costa Rica. Coffee production takes 55 hectares of the immense farm, with another 10 hectares reserved for sugar cane, and the remaining devoted to forest conservation.
Owned and passed down through more than a century of Alberto Guardia’s family, the farm made significant changes under Alberto’s direction starting in the 1970s. In 1999, the family made the pivotal decision to cultivate specialty coffee exclusively. Together with his son Diego, who joined him as co-manager in 2011, the Guardia family has dedicated itself to experimenting and elevating coffee production in Costa Rica, as well as their sustainability mission.
