Dialing in Your Daily Brew: A Simple Guide to Consistency
We’ve all been there: You open a fresh bag of Perk Coffee, brew a cup, and it’s perfect. But the next morning, using the same beans, it tastes just a little bit… off. Maybe it’s a bit too bitter, or perhaps it feels a little thin.
The secret to café-quality coffee at home isn’t magic, it’s consistency. When you subscribe to Perk, you’re already getting the highest quality beans. Now, let’s make sure your brewing technique does them justice every single morning.
1. The Golden Ratio: Weigh, Don’t Scoop
If you want the same flavor every day, you have to use the same amount of coffee and water. While “two tablespoons” is a classic measurement, coffee beans vary in density.
-
The Pro Tip: Use a digital kitchen scale.
-
The Starting Point: Aim for a 1:16 ratio. That means for every 1 gram of coffee, use 16 grams (or ml) of water.
-
Example: For a standard mug, try 15g of coffee to 240g of water.
2. Mind the Grind
The size of your coffee grounds is the “valve” that controls how fast flavor is extracted. If your coffee tastes sour or salty, it’s under-extracted (the grind is too coarse). If it’s bitter or dry, it’s over-extracted (the grind is too fine).
| Method | Grind Size | Texture Similarity |
| French Press | Coarse | Sea Salt |
| Drip / Pour Over | Medium | Table Salt |
| Espresso | Fine | Powdered Sugar |
3. Temperature is Key
Boiling water (100°C) can actually scorch your delicate coffee grounds, leading to a burnt taste. Most coffee pros find the “sweet spot” for extraction is between 90°C and 96°C.
Hack: If you don’t have a temperature-controlled kettle, just let your boiling water sit for about 30–60 seconds before pouring.
4. The “Bloom” Phase
When you first pour water over fresh coffee, you’ll see it bubble and fizz. This is the Bloom. It’s the release of $CO_2$ trapped in the beans from the roasting process. If that gas doesn’t escape, it repels water and prevents even extraction.
-
How to do it: Pour just enough water to wet the grounds (about double the weight of the coffee) and wait 30 seconds before continuing your pour.
5. Change Only One Variable
If your brew isn’t quite right, don’t change everything at once! If it’s a bit too strong, keep your grind the same but add a little more water next time. If it’s too bitter, make your grind slightly coarser. By changing only one thing, you’ll “dial in” your perfect cup in no time.
