Our Story

Perk was started by coffee-crazy couple Paul and Serena. Their coffee journey began much earlier in Africa, where they both lived for several years. Serena grew up in Kenya where her grandparents pioneered the first Chinese restaurant in the coastal town of Mombasa. Paul moved to Kenya after finishing law school in Australia and became a farmer in Masaai land. It’s in Kenya that they fell in love with coffee and developed an appreciation for its delicious “fruity” coffees and the beautiful highland plantations.

From Kenya, they spent two years in Hawaii. Their search for great coffee continued as they explored the stunning sea view plantations of Kona, Big Island. Their spirit of adventure finally brought them to Asia where they decided to put their roots down. Perk was born out of their passion for great coffee and travel.

At Perk, it’s our firm belief that fresher is better. We roast twice a week right in Malaysia and send out your beans within 48 hours of roasting. This ensures that you get to enjoy coffee at its best, and at the same time support local.

We proudly support our amazing farmers by ensuring we pay above Fairtrade price for all our coffees. This is particularly close to Paul’s heart, being a farmer himself for many years!

Our Team

Paul

Constantly caffeinated, Paul tastes scores of coffees every week to bring you the best beans on the planet. A farmer for 19 years, he has a strong empathy for the farmers who grow our coffees. He has a deep passion for nature, food, and adventure. One of his favourite past times is riding his motorbike through his farm to check on his crops. His motto is “Live life fully and have fun!”

Favourite brew method: V60 – clean crisp taste and oh so easy to prepare and clean!

Serena

Serena unleashes her creative juices into everything at Perk. She also loves to get outdoors and close to nature. From hiking the Cévennes mountains, to road tripping through southern Africa, to night diving with manta rays, she constantly seeks out ways to connect with nature. Although getting her feet muddy doesn’t bother her, on a daily basis she’s actually a hygiene freak!

Favourite brew method: French press – strong and heavy bodied, with a dash of milk!

Wan Yen

Wan Yen is in charge of Perk’s business development and heads Perk Malaysia. She loves that most Perk customers are like her – coffee noobs that started an interest in home brewing – and uses that to grow Perk with the mission of making the best coffee accessible to anyone.

Favourite brew method: Aeropress inverted – with a generous amount of milk!

Lionel

Lionel is Perk’s digital marketing wizard. He found he could combine his love of coffee, background in video production, and obsession with data and analytics to help Perk grow online. He can often be found on his laptop frequenting cafes between Asia and Australia, and loves to help more people discover freshly roasted coffee.

Favourite brew method: V60 and French Press – he’s a big fan of a good fruity Ethiopian coffee!

Alex

Alex could be seen sipping his iced black coffee at Peel street cafes. As a lifelong entrepreneur himself, he was energised by the opportunity to spearhead and implement Perk’s expansion into HK and the greater China region.

Favourite brew method: He now drinks Perk Yirgacheffe by way of Aeropress or v60 pour over.

Firdaus

Firdaus is our operations guy for Malaysia. So you know he runs the show – he helps pack your coffee, see that we’re well stocked with pretty brew gear, making sure our courier guys are sending you coffee as fast as they can, brewing coffee at events. A biotech graduate, he’s now improving our planet by making sure humankind gets their hands on the best coffee in the world!

Favourite brew method: Espresso – superheroes like him needs his coffee mean and good!

Hao Shin

Hao Shin is the guy who ensures our customers in Singapore get their coffee fix. He believes that coffee is about connecting people, from producer to roaster, from roaster to you! His super power is the ability to make coffee taste better!

Favourite brew method: Anything pour over!

Gil

Gil is part of our Customer Care team. He wakes up with 2 daily goals – drink good coffee, make customer happy. Offline, he spends most of his time doing his DIY projects or chillin’ with his cats. Gil loves to ride and run errands around the city on his folding bike.

Favourite brew method: French press with lots of milk!

MJ

MJ is part of our Customer Care team. She’s a real people person, and we love her for that! When she’s not in front of the screen, she is a bibliophile and a thalasophile, so it’s no wonder that she loves reading books while at the shore and sipping her wine.

Zenelle

Zen is part of our Customer Care team. She is committed to making the customer happy, and loves journeying with new coffee enthusiasts.
She is a fur mom and a coffee enthusiast. In her past time, Zen loves taking picture and walking her dogs. She loves drinking coffee to start her day with full of energy.
